GOTLAND

The Swedish province Gotland is the largest island in the Baltic Sea. Historically, it was a stronghold of the Vikings, and later a Hanseatic trade center. The island has many monuments from Viking and Middle Ages, including rune stones, well preserved building and ruins. Details from rune stones can be found in the collection below. Sheep raising has been an important livelihood on Gotland for centuries. The Vikings brought back sheep from expeditions into Russia and crossed them with  native sheep. Skilled sheep farmers as well as seafarers, they  brought sheep along on their journeys to provide meat and skins enroute.
